Congratulations to OFSAA Gold Medalist Pole Vaulter Bennett Woods!
This past June 6th – 8th, Alumni Stadium University of Guelph hosted the 2019 OFSAA Track & Field Competition. The Ontario High school Championship is one of the largest meets in North America with the top 24 Ontario athletes competing in a full schedule of events at the Midget (grade 9) Junior (grade 10) and Senior (grade 11- 12) levels.
On the second day of competition GBDSS student athlete Bennett Woods entered the championship seeded number one in the pole vault after setting new records in all but one qualifying meet proceeding OFSAA. Bennett began at 3.80m jumping clean through 4.00m. To win the competition he elected to jump 4.25m. He then raised the bar to 4.46m to challenge the 1992 record of 4.45m. On his 2nd jump he was well above the mark but hit the crossbar on his way down. Bennett now looks forward to qualifying for the Athletics Ontario Championship and Canadian Nationals.
Outstanding provincial performances were also attained by Sierra McLaren with a 5th place Midget Girls Pole Vault going out at 2.90m, and 13th in Midget girls HJ going out at 1.55m. Liam Knoll finished 6th in Jr Boys Pole Vault going out at 3.80m. Midget Boy Vaulters Aidan Withrow and Parker Roper finished 11th and 18th.
